UH-OH!! You are saying the hardened steel cone portion of that nut
separated from the less hard steel outer part. Right? And that hardened
steel cone shaped piece is still down in the wheel and on the stud??

I had similar. A nut froze on the stud and could not be removed. I tried
to cut the nut off. Couldn't do it. I wound up grinding the nut and the
stud down, but when I got to that hardened steel part - that is when I
learned about the construction of the thing. It took me several hours of
grinding with a small grinding tool to cut through the hardened steel
and get down far enough into it to release the grip on the rim. I had to
replace the stud, but didn't damage the rim.
