Does it run better-proper when it's warmed up? Did it loose power before-after the cam bearings? What else was replaced when the engine was opened?

I had to replace the cam bearings on my 85 Vanagon. The engine lost power. When it's cold in winter, I have to race the engine just to get it going in first gear.
