Welcome to the world of late model diesel technology. Due to the emissions controls the recommended oils are low zinc/phosphorous etc. For any brand look for the VW specs 504/00 and 507/00. This will also lock you into lower viscosities such as 5w-30. Do not look for older Diesel oils. Mobil sells a 5w-30 ESP which is carried at Mercedes/Sprinter dealers and has these specs.

As for break in, newer engines really don't need much babying . Just don't abuse it. Normal driving in traffic for a few days will take care of it.

Fellow vanners,

[Excuse the cross post]

Just got a 2012 Jetta TDI - now I have no excuse if I fill with the wrong fuel. Couple of questions:

The dealership shop foreman said no break in just drive it regularly.

The owner's manual says pretty much what any gas engine breakin says: 600 miles easy, no full throttle, avoid long periods at a single speed [I think they mean RPM] then gradually increase up to about 1000 miles.

What says this group? Shop foreman or manual?

The shop foreman also said they use a special Castrol SLX Professional LL03 5-30. Doesn't say diesel rated on it, matter of fact it's not API rated at all, made for VW and as far as I can figure out only sold there too.

An opinions on this?

Mike
