Subject: rebuilding Vanagon door locks - Steve's Lock Shoppe
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

The door locks on my 85 Transporter were toast. The driver's side cylinder was so corroded that most of the wafers were seized. I tried rebuilding them myself using a combination of the original wafers and my stash of used ones but I was not satisfied with the results.

I contacted long time Vanagon list member Steve Sandlin and made arraignments to ship him both door handles so he could rebuild the lock cylinder as he saw fit and cut new steel keys to match. The turn-around time was about 10 days though there was a holiday weekend that slowed the mail service down a bit.

Steve also stocks the OE plastic headed "VW" keys and a high quality generic plastic headed key that are made of steel NOT chromed brass.

If you just want/need a high quality and new key you can send Steve the key code stamped on the inside of the handle mechanism and he can make a high quality key using that key code. If necessary he can verify the key code using a photo or scan of your old key.

I am very satisfied with the results and I highly recommend Steve and his fine work.
