Dunno why exactly, but it sure seems there are a whole lot more Vanagons west of the Mississippi and on the left coast than east of the Mississippi. We have them, but no where near the numbers out west. In my area there are only one or two shops that will work on them. Many have said flat out they won't work on them. There is one mechanic that I let work on my van, but it's only becasue we have developed a working relationship over the last seven years. He told me recently that he would rather work on mine than all the other vehicles put together. Reason?? so easy to work on. And it's so true. Stop and think about how the modern front wheel drive machines are all jammed together in the front end.
