Great suggestion!  Coming from a bicycle shop background my own self, I can also say that it's nice being able to lift what you're working on.

See if he can volunteer in a bicycle shop, at least for a short time.  It's a good way to pick up a "feel" for tools.  There are lots of community-based bicycle "shops" for the hoemless who could use the help. You';ll have to seek them out, though.
