Subject: Tool tip: hose clamp pliers work
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

In order to progress on this broken exhaust pipe bolt I've had to drain the cooling system (don't ask), and I've rationalized that it should be done occasionally to introduce fresh coolant.  Anyway, I have been reading various recommendations for this type tool and now that I've tried one I highly recommend you get one in case you ever need to loosen/remove any of the numerous and variously-sized flat pinch-type clamps on the Vanagon hoses.

I diligently tried regular slip-joint pliers, needlenose, Channel Locks, Vise Grips (two types) and they all slipped off the clamps in maddening fashion, so I spent my $19 at Advance Auto for #AC839. Do not be without one of these in your kit.  They just plain work, and they have a neat ratcheting lock that holds the clamp in an open position so that you can maneuver it over the hose more easily.  Add a shot of lube on the outside of the hose to help the clamp slide away from the clamped area and you're there.  Props to whoever has mentioned this tool in the past.

I'm no nearer getting that broken bolt out, but that is for another day and a different post.

Stephen
