You might also check the NRA website or just Amazon; I believe there is at least one book available, if not more, that gives you the law for every state, and I haven't looked but probably websites as well - maybe NRA website has that info too, I don't know. It is complicated in California, and I believe what Jim quoted is true - all separate, and gun locked in its case.

In California it is better to be safe than sorry. Smog and guns are two things that the police here and the California Air Resources Board take very seriously, and will get you in big trouble if you don't follow the rules (if you can figure out what they are).
