A good many folks still speak the old tongues. Plenty of them still hold town festivals, most in the fall of the year (so you are mostly 10 months away). Steer clear of New Braunfalls and Fredricksburg, where the street food now runs to turkey legs and corn dogs, and the sausages mostly are factory formed. Head for the tiny burgs, like Westphalia, Boerne, Hill Top, Montague, West, Greune. Most of those have at least one church dating from the mid-19th century, some of them the old fashioned "painted" churches, with the interior lavishly and lovingly decorated by hand. In these places the Old World is still evident. Take your bus and go! mcneely
