you probably meant to write 'signal to the injectors test' ..not ignition.
those are different things of course.
here's what I do if I have a won't-run due to fuel pump not running.
I just power up the fuel pump ...
jumpering at the fp relay socket works very nicely.
You can even just drag another battery under the van and connect it with
jumper wires right to the fuel pump.
( the polarity on the fuel pump is hard to see ..the marks are small ...but
they are there. )
THEN .....if that gets you a running van ..
you know all you have to work on is the lack of signal to the fuel pump.
if making the fuel pump run 'manually' doesn't make it run .
then work on fuel delivery, fuel filter, consdier restricted fuel tank etc.
Study the wiring diagrams.
It's in there ..
'key on '15' voltage from the igntion switch is an ECU input, I'm pretty
sure.
I forget right now if ECU gets power from the main relay ..
usually the main relay powers up .....
power to each of the four injectors ...
oxygen sensor heater circuit if it's a 2.1 ..
oh .....here's a weird thing about the Bentley manual wiring diagrams some
people don't know, and helps nicely to make the confusing and harder to use.
If you follow a wire and it goes to a box with a number in it ...
this is fun...
look straight down at the bottom of the page and see what current track that
number is above.
Say it's a 12 in a little box...
look straight down and see what current track that box is on...say it's
current track 25..
then go to current track 12 and look for a '25' in a box straight above the
12 that identifes that current track. Those two boxes are connected
electrically.
maddening really ..
but when yuou understand that little odd thing...then you can follow how
power gets to the ecu , for example.
Having the Bentley manual is more or less required if one is going to fix
one's own vanagon.

You're only as good as your last zero-ing of your multimeter. Mine (and me)
was/were out of whack by 22 ohms. Now it's zero-ed/zed-ed? Thanks Mark for
identifying my ignorance, and with such grace...
I just now took Alistar's keen advice and jiggled my fuse box, but no such
luck, no sound from down under.
I'm going to get a new ignition switch per the long-shot advice by Zoltan
(cheap/good to have as spare).
I keep going back and forth thinking it's an ECU gone bad. How/from where
does the ECU get power? Remember, normal highway driving at 60 mph and
suddenly, without warning the engine stops and I coast to a stop. Spark at
plug wire but no fuel pump,etc. And the NOID did not light up on ignition
test. And all the rest.
