The Lancaster was built by AVRO - a company that had it's HQ in Chadderton, near Manchester, Lancashire - where I was raised until my departure in the 70's.  Sorry to read Scott defines this early bombing beast as "ugly" - it managed to "do the job" for quite a while before the (dare I say ) "pretty" USA aircraft decided to join the fight.

I agree - the Krauts designed, and continue to design many nice autos, the Vanagon being one.  They also designed a lot of pretty awesome airplanes - none of which I will mention here just in case WWIII might break out before it's time.

Today I looked at a 2002 silver Westfalia in mint condition - again - then a new design from our Vanagons - but it too is a pretty machine.  Much too expensive for my budget.

The Brits also have the unique knack to make other things very ugly - take my wife for example.  Ouch!  Funny but true.  But then - look at me!  Wonder why the kids call me "Porky?"
