Never been to Mexico, but --- in my bush pilot days - no gas from out in a village somewhere ever went into the gas tank without first being passed through a genuine chamois skin. Saved the day many times. It might be a prudent practice in Mexico or anywhere out of country. Course that doesn't help right now.

If bad gas is the principle suspect, maybe draining the tank and passing it through the chamois might help - if a chamois can be found.
