Do you have the receipt that was given to you when you first transferred the vehicle? If so then the sales tax should be listed as a line item on the receipt from the State.

If not then the assumption is you have not paid and you get to pay again!

Hi List,

I hope this subject is Friday appropriate for this list, as it does concern my Vanagon :o)

We're Settling into a new home in the beautiful state of Washington, and I could sure use some help with licencing my Vanagon!

The State DMV now tells me that I have to prove I paid sales tax on a Vanagon I bought several years ago?

& If I can not, I will have t pay a "Use Tax" ?

In the state of Utah, where we moved from, Sales tax is paid on Every vehicle that gets licenced! Shouldn't my title and licence plates be enough proof that I paid taxes (in UT) for the state of Washinton?

Granted, at least in UT, the sales tax Is paid on a sales price that essentially works on the honor system. At least on the privately sold vehicles. Many buyers and sellers agree to state a lower price, to help the buyer with tax's. & How fair is it to pay tax's on vehicle Soo many times? Especially if the vehicle is bought and sold very often? With Vanagons, as us horse traders know, this could be every 6 months.

Of course, I have my registration, emissions and safety receipts, but how many people keep their little sales receipt showing sales tax, from 7 years ago? I will from now on! :o)

Why should I pay sales tax in WA when I bought and paid the tax in UT?

I'm guessing fair market value is going to be around $235 in Use tax.

Is there anyway around this dilemma?
