dear smell stunning That you would change out fuel lines in engine bay and not by pass the firewall fitting and toss old one in trash.... keep driving ur vanagon and you will discover the leak .... (tounge in cheek) seriously though what year or model is your vanagon do u have rear located fuel filler ... do u notice all the time or only after fill ... or while engine running do u notice smell when you open bay .... or if u leave open and go away does it appear to be there when you return let us know before the fire suppressors regards
