If you really want to do this "right," short of doing it really right and getting it welded, the JB weld route sounds good to me BUT if you can manage it according to the shape of the place where the case is cracked, you might feel more comfortable if you put a couple of steel straps across the crack, and JB weld them in place as well. Whatever forces caused the crack in the first place will still be there, and you may need something to relieve the case of that load. I too believe in the mystical properties of JB weld, but don't know how well it holds up in tension, which a spreading crack could cause. You might even put a couple of screws into the metal bars and really forget about it. I did this to a cracked block in a renault dauphine when I was a kid, and the straps held the block closed just fine for longer than the rest of the car continued to run.
