Roger, Don't feel bad, it could have been worse. My daughter borrowed my 2002 Golf for an extended trip (NC to FL). To save time and money, her and hubby thought they would make breakfast in the car instead of stopping somewhere. Long story short, they blew the alternator by plugging a toaster into a small inverter like this: http://tinyurl.com/847cr6x .

Morale of the story here is: do the math. Spend some time on Google to prevent problems.

The worst part of the story; it was Fourth of July weekend. She had to be towed to some scary garage in Alabama. It really bordered on a nightmare.
