I was just looking at his other book (I own a copy); Small on Safety - The designed-in Dangers of the Volkswagen.

In this book he tears down the VW's many safety defects.

oi vey, every time this issue comes up, the knives come out for my man Ralphie. First off, the book was published in '65, the same year GM finally redesigned the new IRS rear suspension, so the handling problems were effectively resolved by then. Second, there were already 100 lawsuits against GM regarding the handling of Corvairs when Ralph put pen to paper, so he didn't fabricate this issue. His book was about the automotive industry, not just GM or the Corvair, and his industry critiques directly led to many safety improvement that I doubt any of us would prefer not to have for our loved one's vehicles. I happen to be a fan of the '64 < Corvairs, and consider them to be one of the only Merkin cars I'd ever bother to own.
