Quickest and cheapest is a motorcycle-type bungee net that has hooks at corners and along the sides, but some of us have build gates. Check the Samba thread "Vanagon Dog Divider" featuring several solutions:

You did not clarify what the "rear" is.  Do you mean the wayback behind the rear seat, or just the area behind the front seats?  You might be able to adapt a child gate for the wayback.  Good luck!
