There is only one way I know to test a torque converter outside a shop that's set up to manufacture them - install it.

You just don't have the tools needed to spin it up under load or to provide fresh transmission fluid to it outside the car.

That's why transmission shops won't install used ones and typically install a new torque converter with any rebuilt transmission.

It's probably to your advantage to do the same.

The four speed in my 87 Vanagon is stuck between third and fourth (probably the victim of the common problem with the 3/4 slider). I have an automatic transaxle, accelerator cable, axles, shifter, starter from and 84 that I would like to install. The only part I am missing is the control rod which runs from the shifter to the shift arm on the transmission. This should be easy to fabricate. Are there recommendations on how to have the torque converter and transmission tested for proper operation before this conversion? I would like to know they are working before I transplant them.
