I have had a Syncro tranny welded before but a different section of the case. It seems like asking the welder would be the best thing. Myself I would be inclined to try to glue it first. Just drain the tranny completely, then jack up the DS to tip any remaining oil away from the crack. Clean, wait, clean, wait, clean, etc until I was sure the oil was not still seeping from the crack. Then scuff the crack area with sandpaper. There is some 5 minute JB weld that I have used a few times and it sets up quick.
