This afternoon I had to go into the "Outback" near Goldendale,
Wa....3500' elevation and recent snow. Up a slimy dirt track with snow
and hills....My clutch action was getting worse and worse, grinding on gear
changes if I didn't rev-match and finally, not possible to get a gear when
stopped with the clutch in. Had to turn off, get gear, then turn on and
go.....Since I was unfamiliar with this track to a job I was looking
at.....and it was way out there....I found a spot and turned around...went
home and bled the clutch.....
am usually able to nurse a 2wd vehicle up most roads in the snow...but
a Vanagon with an inoperative clutch on a backcountry road with hills, snow
and muck? No, didn't want to try it. Too remote and too cold to walk in
if I went off...
Put the Powerbleeder on the brake res and let the clutch slave
bleed....Black dirty brakefluid, but I couldn't see any air bubbles....the
way the clutch cylinder sits....I think all the air in the line sits right
at the bleeder valve....and when you open it...air comes out first...then
the fluid starts....hoping this is the case....I think I'd have seen some
bubbles if my MC was faulty....I bled till I was getting fresh fluid from
the Brake res up by the instrument cluster...
Anyhow, my clutch action is back to normal....we'll see if that
lasts...hope so, that clutch slave rear bolt kinda sucks to remove.....all
else around that area checked out good....even my now two year old Rescue
Tape repair of the front head hose off my inline four motor....I bet I'll
"pay" for saying that, soon enough....probably out on Hwy 395 at midnight
in the High Sierras or downtown San Bernardino on the freeway...(grin)
