Can someone define "vague shifting" or perhaps let me know if this will help with the shifting problem that just starting surfacing on my '89 2.1L

When I shift it's "clunky", for lack of a better word. In 3rd and 4th gear, the shifter vibrates and makes noise unless I hold it off to the far right.
