I'm not an industrial designer but I have worked with many of them on human
interface projects. They hate digital readouts for the reason you mention!
Digital readouts require the re-creation of a context for the numbers every
time you look at them, where the operating scale of an analog gauge
provides its own context without thinking about it. You can get around the
problem with a known context like percentage, but that is not always what
you want.
