Automatic transmissions have two vents on top. One is for the Auto section, the other for the final drive.

Here's a smaller file size image showing vent location on an air cooled and WBX transmission:

WBX is on RH side. Follow oil drip up and you will see the hole on each.

This may help you if using a Vanagon un-aware tech.
