On my '87 Syncro Westy there was a connector above the closet on the rear defrost line. My rear defrost had been rewired under the van. I'll bet someone pulled hard on the original wire at the rear of the closet/cabinet area and unplugged that connector and was then screwed short of removing the closet/cabinet.
