So, I took it off the van and studied it a little closer. Hmmmmm, the drain holes are on the side? Then it hit me, this was simply a passengers side mirror installed on the drivers side!! This may be common knowledge, but I swear in 10 years of Vanagon ownership I'd never seen the mirrors switched like this before!

ive seen that a lot before..people installing them on the opposite side they were intended.. one guy i met thought they were supposed to be like that.. the body shop installed them backwards after they painted his van and theyd been like that for years
