one way batteries are rated is in CCA's .. cold cranking amps.

a regular gas 85 vanagon probably takes a 400 or so CCA amp battery in the applicarion catalogue. that's very much on the modest end of the scale.

I aks for a '48' ..which is a diesel vanagon battery .. ofen with 700 or 800 CCA's and it's the exact same fitment, terminal location etc.

that's the battery you should get ... it's more ooomph, You would like to see at least 13.8 volts charging voltage at the battery, engine running. .. and up to 14.5 volts. there are even adjustable voltage regulators that can be bought. Then you set the charging voltage yourself.

do check your alternator belt tension ...just to make sure it's not loose.
