hi you guys. first ....4650 lbs is not a lot for a 2WD vanagon to weigh. that's very normal. notice how severe the front weight bias is ! As you add weight in the middle of a 2WD vanagon .. seems like 2/3rds of it goes on the front axle. I am skeptical that Roger's loaded 1.9 TD 5 speed westy-type vanagon weighed nearly 8,000 pounds . up to 6,500 ..sure .. lots of very packed and over-equipped syncro's can weigh that much .. but 8,000 lbs.. I'm skeptical on that. so you were running tires rated at 2,000 each ? I know, having seen the fine machine ........it had a common actually-not-truly vanagon tires on it . I also notice that one of those not-really-vanagon rated alloy wheels broke in the roll-over crash. I just heard two complaints about that very model of tire recently too. anyway .. it's all fun. Gary does not over-pack I don't think., I did have a high end syncro westy here recently .. they guy loves to max-out on everything. He had a 40lb tow chain. he had giant truck tire irons that weighed 25 lbs. he had a 50 lb high lift jack .. *everything* he had on and in that van was over-the-top heavy duty. But when we finished the DOHC 2.5 Subaru engine and rebuilt trans installation .. it drove like a new almost modern car. Has heated leather Mitsubishi Montaro seats, nav system .. even fuel pressure gauge on the dash .. if it can go on a vanagon ..he had it. I'm sure it weighed well over 6,000 lbs ..but it drove great. what fun ! Scott www.turbovans.com
