I would have thought so too, but I checked that it is indeed sold as M10 threads. The designation is M10x1k, and from what I've gathered the 1k stands for "keg" which is apparently a german tapered thread designation. (The "keg" style threads are referenced here, under the Metric section: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/thread-standards-d_776.html)

After searching around some, I'm getting the impression that all the VDO M10 threads are actually M10x1k tapered threads...
