Wes -

Did a bit of research in my reference library of VDO stuff back into the 70s. My July 86 and May 87 VDO Catalogs are the best when comparing senders and their specs. It is true the all VDO Pressure Senders with 10mm Threads (1mm Pitch) are of the 1K style, which is tapered. They do (or did) make a 12mm x 1.5 or 14mm x 1.5 Pressure Sender, but were not tapered. Must be a good reason why. Probably for better sealing without the washer. Problem with that is over-torquing and cracking the metal it's being screwed into, but I've used the 10mm 1K style for decades without a problem (yet). Just remember not to use sealing tape on the threads or it won't properly ground.

I further verified it in my 1997 VDO Catalog which is harder to comb through to find this info. I wish they would keep it simple :( -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" 75 914 1.8 "Nancy" Full Timing Since March 1999 oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com Find me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Thompson/100000710343835 *********************************** On Fri, Dec 9, 2011 at 2:19 PM, pickle vanagon <greenvanagon@gmail.com> wrote: > I would have thought so too, but I checked that it is indeed sold as M10 > threads.  The designation is M10x1k, and from what I've gathered the 1k > stands for "keg" which is apparently a german tapered thread designation. > (The "keg" style threads are referenced here, under the Metric section: > http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/thread-standards-d_776.html) > > After searching around some, I'm getting the impression that all the VDO > M10 threads are actually M10x1k tapered threads... > > > On Fri, Dec 9, 2011 at 4:53 PM, Ken Lewis <kdlewis@northstate.net> wrote: > >> Wes, >> Most likely NOT metric threads if it's tapered. >> Ken >> >> >> ----- Original Message ----- From: "pickle vanagon" < >> greenvanagon@GMAIL.COM> >> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> >> Sent: Thursday, December 08, 2011 6:52 PM >> Subject: [VANAGON] VDO oil sender with untapered threads? >> >> >> >>  I ordered an M10 threaded VDO oil sender, and was a little disappointed to >>> find that it has *tapered* M10 threads, unlike the VW sender which uses >>> standard threads and a sealing washer.  Does anybody now if the VDO sender >>> comes in a version with standard M10 threads and a sealing washer, instead >>> of tapered threads? >>> >>> Thanks! >>> Wes >>> >>> >> >>
