Reverse should be the same because it's going through the same transmission.

Heat can be resistor heat - it would just reduce the range.

Cooling is better done with a separate motor driven compressor - again, it would reduce the range.

New battery technologies are coming out that will make all of this possible while retaining a 100 mile range. But it won't help Vanagons much unless you only camp in your own neighborhood.
