Dear Courtney

Allow me please to retract my earlier advice regarding US customs, and offer something more moderate in its stead. Most importantly: provide details. Make a few park reservations for your first week, for example, and bring along printouts showing said reservations. Write out an itinerary for your trip, even if it's a rough plan, and have it ready to show. Include an anticipated departure date - you can be sure they will ask so it might as well be on there.

You won't be accused of lying to customs and banned from the country for changing your itinerary on the fly, but I think most people would agree that entering the USA and essentially saying, "I'm going to be in your country for an indefinite period of time with no fixed address" is asking for hassle.

Apologies to Bernie, Roger, enemies of the Oxford Comma, and others to whom I caused offence.

Graham
