So if you install a strap or other device to limit travel where is the advantage of the longer shock?

Unnecessary FUD.

It is simple to check the amount of suspension extension with syncro shocks on 2wd van and if one is concerned that it is too much, install a strap to limit travel.

No need to stay on the smooth roads.
