Slip-joint pliers (or Vise Grips perhaps) at the extreme outer end of
the spring, and more force than you think you can exert.  It's a
bugger, especially with cold hands.  But I've managed it multiple
times, including squeezing 3/32 brass rod around the slot (by nipping
it with small sharp Vise Grips) in lieu of the vanished clip.
