Sometimes the pumps do get noisy especially when warm. More often is a sign
the inlet filter or the screen in the tank is clogging and restricting the
flow.

In October my 1985 1.9 L Camper started making a buzzing noise climbing up a
steep mountain in Ashville, N.C. It's so intermittent I couldn't get out of
the van quick enough to trace it down until last week, when we pulled into a
campground and it continued long enough to find out it's coming from the
fuel pump. This is a VW pump dealership installed only last June! The engine
idles fine even when it's making noise. Is this a defective pump or is there
some other reason this could be happening? I'm sure if I take it to the
dealership it will be completely silent when they look at it.
