Installing a bigger steering wheel (the non PS Vanagon version) is a Stupid Westy Trick that I've tried.

The bottom of the 'screen isn't eclipsed, but the SAT NAV on top of the instrument binnacle is, slightly. I kind of enjoy the Ralph Kramden & look feel of the thing, but it won't work for you if you've got fat thighs.

Can no longer twist & slide to exit. Workaround is pretty much slide, then twist.
