man I should hope people know NGK is a brand of spark plug !
those have been in very common use in non-american cars and vans since the
70's.
I've installed about 10,000 sets of them or whatever.
btw..
'the tune up parts' on vanagons ..
they need to be decent for sure.
But they are not the weak area *at all*.
I like Bosch parts for sure ( most spark plugs you buy these days are just
fine ..
whether Bosch, Champion, NGK, Nippon Denso..........as long as it's not an
el cheapo ..
they'll be fine in a waterboxer vanagon with electronic igntion. )
my point is though .....it's usually not the tune up parts when waterboxers
act up.
the tune up parts have to be decent ..including spark plug wires ...
but usualy it's more fuel injection type things.
Here's on I've seen on 1.9 waterboxer engines that can cause all kinds of
intermittant no-starts ..
connection to Temp Sensor II ..
that wire plug and connnector gets tired ..they are over 20 years old after
all,
it's not a part you can buy new by itself very easily ..
I fought intermittant 84 vanagon no-star condition t for a long time before
..
and in the end , it turned out to be that connection ...
and sometimes the sensor itself. It's a very important input to the ecu.
btw..in any 'runs awful' situation ..always try unplugging the oxygen sensor
..
also ..if running down the road, but loosing power ..try key-off-back-on ..
that resets things and will sometimes keep you moving until at least a
better place to deal with it.
I've also had..
on a 1.9 waterboxer engine ..
bad Hall Sender in the distributor .......for sure, black and white..and a
'fun' part to change ..
and ...
Idle Stabilzer ........for sure, black and white, I have seen those cause
all kinds of weirdness, no start, etc.
it does say 'REPAIR DIST. PLUG'
that connection .....on the side of the distributor ..
pretty delicate there..
the plastic part of the plug breaks often ......where it goes into the
distributor ..
therefore I do not keep that 'keeper' thing on the distributor connector
wire.
The problem I've had is not them falling off..
but getting them off without breaking the plastic part of the distributor
..which is part of the Hall Sender actually.
also .........the connector wire and plug needs to be inserted down pretty
deeply into the plug on the side of the distributor.
there's a ground wire there too ....make sure it's ok.
anyway ..glad she's a-runnin' like she should be !
stay cozy,
scott
