Some time in the last five years they apparently gave in and reformulated WD40. The MSDS no longer lists Stoddard solvent as the primary (or any) ingredient and does now contain some lube oil. And the marketing material does now specifically list lubrication as an application.

That said, ordinary machine oil is intended for applications like small motors and should be superior to many other things for this.
