Back in those days most manual tranny cars were three speeds. Since automatics have the torque converter for torque multiplication less gears were needed. Tow speed autos were very common back then. Remember the GM 2 speed slip and slide powerglide?

I almost bought an early Ford Falcon. I thought it odd to have a TWO speed automatic. I bought a yellow 71 sunroof Beetle instead, which was my first VW. That was 20 years and many other VWs ago.
