As a kid at my grandparents' camp on Lake Winnipesaukee we'd impale the bread on toasting forks (also used for hot dogs and marshmallows) and hold it over the fire in the fireplace.

But on Scamp I used that exact toaster for many years over an alcohol stove. It took care and attention and we didn't do it all that much since anything you eat on a sailboat is wonderful - but it worked ok, stowed flat and lasted a long time in a salt environment.
