that's a real good suggestion on the power path ..and later vanagons can have that issue. I have seen it be as simple as a loose alternator main post nut being loose.

the intermittent nature makes me think it's not that ...but you should check for sure. and it's always very, very useful to have a remote starter switch .. that way you are right there by the engine when you crank it with key on .. and check for spark coming out of the center coil wire .. if it's not there, ( and the relays click as suggested to check ) ..it is likely the Hall Sender.

there is an important ground for the distributor ...in that bundle on the left head. check that. See what the connector is like on the side of the distributor ...I don't even like to mess with them ...it's kinda delicate there. but inspect that, might learn something.

here's a test I like to do ...remove distributor ( leave it connected at the side connection..remove dist cap ) ....turn on ignition ( do NOT start or crank engine on starter ! ) ..rig your coil wire to spark to ground .. then rotate distributor with your fingers ... and change the angle of the wire connection .in case it's intermittent there.

as I said...the last one I had was very intermittent and it was the hall sender. you could try disconnecting the ECU ( key off of course ) ..insect there ...put the connector back on carefully. there's a small ground wire there too, by the ecu. I've never seen a bad one.
