Subject: DIY HomeLink for Vanagon

Here's a little Vanagon mod I recently made that I really like.  Unlike many, I park my Vanagon in my garage at home; previously I had placed the "clicker"  for the garage door opener in the driver's side map pocket.  What I didn't like was that it took up space for...maps!  And a little awkward to use as it tended to slide around.  Also, if ever the car was broken into and they took the clicker and my address on the registration in the glovebox, they'd have a key to my garage (at least temporarily til I got home to change the code).  Love that my other car (Toyota Highlander) has one of those HomeLink gadgets built-in with switches near the dome light....I find that very handy and theft-proof.

So.....I made my own "built-in" HomeLink....sort of.  I removed the lower plastic cover from the steering column.  Just enough space inside to mount the "clicker"; just used tape to mount it on the interior.  Prior to mounting, I found a very tiny momentary switch; drilled a small hole at a strategic location on the lower plastic cover and mounted it.  Ran 2 wires from the switch to the clicker, locating the switch inside it and soldering my new switch in parallel with the existing switch.

Works great!  Yeah, every few years when the battery weakens I'll have to remove the cover to get to the clicker to replace the battery; have thought of wiring in 12 VDC to solve that, maybe next time.

Happy New Year and hope to see you at BBTB in Havasu in a few weeks.
