I have been following this thread but didn't reply earlier because I had no glossy pictures to post. Now that the tin can idea is out there I will try and describe what I have without pics. You place a large coffee can over a stove burner--the bread sits on top of the can. It is super simple and free. You only need to punch a bunch of holes in the bottom (which is now actually the top)--this is your toasting surface. I think the reason why it works so well is that the bread is kept far from the flame. My family used a toaster like this at a primitive camp since the 1940's but it was slightly different. We had an old fashion 4 slice pyramid style toaster but the this can method always made the better toast. Alternatively; you can completely cut off the bottom of the coffee can and create a wire grid to hold the toast high above the flame. Use about 30 inches of some thick solid copper household wire. Punch some holes around the perimeter of top edge and thread the wire through to create the grid . Best part is that the can can be used to hold things while you travel so it doesn't waste space.
