Today I had the chance to try out an idea that was posted here about a week
ago when the subject of making toast on a Westy stove was discussed. I
punched holes in the bottom of a large coffee can (I had to look around to
find one that wasn't made of paperboard) about 1/2 in apart, all over the
closed end. No pattern is required, of course, just the holes, which I made
with a hammer and large nail.

After allowing the finish to burn off, I plopped on a piece of toast. If
you don't have the toaster good and hot, you will get little measles where
the heat comes through the holes. Still good toast though. But, after the
metal end gets hot enough, you get a nice even golden brown that would be
the envy of any kitchen toaster. Plus, the toasting takes only about ten or
fifteen seconds per side (with the burner on high). At this rate, you are
probably getting more toast per minute than any of the commercially-made
models. And, as I said, the toasting is very even if the toaster is
centered on the grate.

This toaster is tall on the stove. Could it be cut down and operate just as
well? Don't know, if anyone cares to experiment I'd like to know. In the
meantime, I will just use it to carry things in the Westy pantry, as the
original suggester mentioned.
