I rarely use more than one tow a year, but I did have one year when I used all four.
The only tech I trust to touch my van is in St. Augustine, over 20 miles from home, so the extra miles are
nice.

AAA membership works, and works well. Get stuck somewhere and need a tow, you will get it. Take the "Plus" version and you get one 100 mile tow per policy year; take the "Premium" version and that goes to 200 miles. The drivers are knowledgeable about reputable repair shops (though not necessarily Vanagon specialist shops). The trip interruption insurance works also, and ask me how I know. But you need at least the "Plus" version to get the trip interruption coverage. I would not think so much of AAA if I only drove late model Toyotas or Hondas. But in addition to those I drive a 20 year old Vanagon. The question is not whether it will fail at some point, but when and where. If I am far from home when that happens, I need a plan. AAA is part of that plan, even if I can do some repairs myself while on the road. BTW, mine is 10 years younger than your.
No matter what some will claim, you do not need the RV version. The van is a van, camper or not, and the word from AAA is that the regular policy covers it. The drivers I have encountered are more than courteous and helpful.
