I was recently told that Texas toll roads simply do not charge for out of state vehicles if the gate is one of the unattended ones that are supposed to be used by pass holders.  I don't know if that is true, but intend to check it out.  I wonder if the one who passed that information to me knows what he is talking about, however.  A few months ago I got a bill in the mail from the Texas Turnpike Authority for a small fee plus a fine for not paying a toll in Houston.  Included in the envelope was a photograph of a vehicle with a license plate similar to mine (same state, one letter difference) but for a Ford van rather than my Vanagon.  Now, I had not been to Houston for a lot of years (good for me!).  I called the number provided, and we got it straightened out with no cost to me.  Seemed foolish on their part, which is what my friend told me.  Collecting out of state tolls and fines costs more than is recouped.  But what do I know?
