Well, Dennis Haynes was right; I replaced the fuel tank and the fuel pump
is now quiet. The fuel intake must have been clogged. I can't really see
anything because it looks like there's a plastic cover over it inside the
tank.
I think the pump was cavitating the fuel and made it look like air moving
through my old style box fuel filter. When this gaseous phase fuel hit the
pump it made it vibrate.
I decided to keep the box type fuel filter to protect the fuel pump but I
ordered the tank with the 12 mm outlet. The box filter has a 7 mm nipple
on the intake side. I reversed the brass fitting on a GoWesty Fuel Filter
Upgrade Kit to get a 7 mm fuel line to the filter.
I found something that I haven't read about before. Both fuel expansion
tank gravity vent valve grommets were so dry and hard they split in half.
The bottom half of each grommet was in its expansion tank and the gravity
vent valve was just laying on top of the tank. There was some grit in both
tanks, probably thrown up from the front wheels. This grit could easily
work its way down into the fuel tank. Since my fuel tank was not badly
corroded inside, it may be that this is what clogged the fuel feed. I don't
know why the grommets on the expansion tank were in such bad shape. All
the grommets on the fuel tank were still soft and flexible, even though it
was the original 1985 tank. Even though they're a pain to remove, it might
be worthwhile to check the fuel expansion tank grommets, at least on the
driver's side where the fuel filler pipe is not in the way. The grommets
are less than $10 each, available from Van Cafe and Van Again. I know
we're all looking for new things to worry about and work on!
