When going onto the grid or the starting lines, theses often drag across track drainage dips, or they smack broken parts off other cars while racing, etc etc. The less well funded racers use this because they can just pop-rivet on a new spoiler whenever needed at reasonable cost, rather than the fancy smancy factory ones made of Carbon fiber and Kevlar, which break just as quickly but cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars.
