Actually there were two original ones, one made by Volkswagen and the other by Westfalia (but still sold by VW under VW's own part numbers). They look similar but not identical. German buyers could get either, but U.S. buyers only got the VW produced one. We import this from Germany ourselves, and it is the more rare Westfalia made version. Chris correctly noticed that it splits into 3 pieces, rather than 5 like the VW version.

There really isn't much to it attaching it, nor is the hardware visible unless you are lying under your van. The original used ten 6x25 fillister head bolts and six 6.3x19 screws, with associated washers and cap nuts. None of the hardware is VW specific, and most people just use whatever they can pick up locally or find on their workbench.
