A possible cure to disel runaway is a valve to shut off the turbo oil supply if such incident happens???

The best we ever did in our (then new) 87 Vanagon in 88 was a solid average of 18.5 mpg on a round trip from Omaha NE to Victoria Vancouver Island. A great trip - of course the Syncro was about 14 months old and everything still worked. Unlike my 87 Syncro now which is in pieces and my 91 GL - which is slowly getting there.

Our 2005 Beetle tdi is a great town car and on regular trips to Ft Lauderdale across Alligator Alley - locked cruise at 60 mph it will get 53 mpg. At this speed I must confess to being almost run over by ALL other drivers doing well over my "economy check" speed. Trouble is - all the "bits" that fail due to bad plastic or design. Both headlights have lost their lens as the glue melts in the equator heat. The the master door lock control has broken one side of the switch, tail light assembly melted - lots of other small aggravating stupid junk. But the tdi is flawless - my big mouth - let's see what Murphy has in store for me.
